Pierre Balmain was a French fashion designer, known for elegance and sophistication.
Balmain´s father died when the future fashion designer was 7 years old. He was the owner of a wholesale drapery business. Balmain´s mother, together with her sisters, operated a fashion boutique. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts; from there, he went to work for Edward Molyneux, a fashion designer. Balmain worked for him from 1934 until 1939. After World War II, he joined Lucien Lelong and opened his own fashion house in 1945.
Balmain is also creator of perfumes. His first successful scent, Ven Vert - Green Wind (1947) was one of the best-selling perfumes of the late 1940s and early 1950s. Other successful perfumes were Jolie Madame (1953), Ivoire (1979) and Eau d´Amazonie (2006).
