Issey Miyake

Issey Miyake (b.1938, Japan) is famous for his 'technical' clothing collections and fashion shows.

Having graduated (1964)at the Tama Art University, Tokyo( the department of graphic design), Issey started to work in Paris and later also in NY City. At the beginning of the 1970s, he came back to Tokyo, where he founded the Miyake Design Studio.

At the end pf the 1980s, his experiments with innovative ways of cloth-folding begun, in order to ensure both – the flexility of the cloth as to contribute to the comform of a wearer and the easement of care as well as production of such items.

These attempts folloyed-up in creating a completely new method, which was named 'garment pleating'. The successive development of this method went so far as to create its improved variant - "Pleats Please"(1993). Acording to this technique, the clothing items are firstly cut and sewn and then inserted into many layers of paper which are immediately put into a heat press, the place where they are finally pleaded. The result is that the pleats are 'recorded' on the fabric's surface and after removing the items from their paper cover, they can be worn immediately.

In the second half of the 1990s, Issey(because of his desire to return to “science“) passed the buck of designing the ladies' and gentlemen's collections to his colleague - Naoki Takizawa. Nowadays, Miyake's fashion houses can be found NY City(there is the leading store named Tribeca, designed by Frank Gehry), London, Paris and, of course, in Tokyo.

Having one's own perfume line seems to be a trend among the fashion designers – this is the case of Issey Miyake, too. At the beginning of the 1990 he released his premiere women' fragrance L'eau d'Issey , which was followed by L'eau d'Issey Pour Homme, intended for men, as well as L'eau Bleue d'Issey Pour Homme. His most up-to-date fragrance for men was released in September 2006. All of Miyake's perfumes are licensed by the Beaute Prestige International offshoot of Shiseido, a perfume producer also for Jean-Paul Gaultier and Narciso Rodriguez.
